Just imagine the following lineup: Sappho,
Michelangelo, Oscar Wilde,
Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Rivera and Ellen DeGeneres -- all appearing on a Tulsa stage this weekend.
Latin pop performer
Jade
Esteban Estrada brings his one-man musical comedy piece, "ICONS:
The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1," to the
Nightingale Theater, portraying these celebrity symbols of homosexuality
through the ages in eight performances.
His show has been a hit with audiences,
and Tulsa is the only Oklahoma stop on
Estrada's 27-city international
tour.
The performer returns to Tulsa after
having served as honorable grand marshal for the 2002 Tulsa Pride parade.
Since that time,
Estrada has been touring, making appearances on Comedy
Central's "The Graham Norton Effect" and recording individual
works and on compilations ("Being Out Rocks" with Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang and others).
The opening performance of
"ICONS" -- 8 p.m. Friday -- is a benefit for Tulsa's Regional
AIDS Interfaith Network, a sponsor of this event along with the Gay and
Lesbian Fund for Tulsa.
Other performances are 10:30 p.m. Friday;
3, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday; and 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Appearing with
Estrada is Jerry Rabushka, debuting his solo production of "Somebody
Else's Life."
