He’s
called a “master entertainer” and “the first gay Latin star.”
San Antonio native
Jade Esteban Estrada, a
singer/dancer/actor/comedian, gets the chance to show
off those performance skills in front of a national
audience this month.
Estrada, who once worked as a choreographer
for flamboyant entertainer Charo, will host the 19th
Annual GLAAD Media Awards on the Bravo Network.
The awards show will include presentations from the four
ceremony locations — New York, Los Angeles, San
Francisco and South Florida.
Estrada hosts the South Florida segment,
which was taped live on April 12 in Fort Lauderdale.
Celebrities scheduled to appear on the broadcast include
comedian Kathy Griffin, actors Kevin Bacon, T.R. Knight
and Wilson Cruz, and fashion designer Tom Ford.
“I’m really excited. It’s nothing but a party,”
Estrada told reporters on the red carpet
before the awards ceremony. “I hope I’m funny tonight.”
Estrada, 32, performs around the country and
makes his home in San Antonio.
He’s appeared on NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” and “30
Rock.” He’s also been a regular in the stand-up comedy
club circuit, performing at Rivercenter Comedy Club and
helping to organize a weekly open mic night at Sam’s
Spot in San Antonio.
He’s also performed in the one-man show “Tortilla
Heaven,” about cultural assimilation among Latinos.
“Often, you don’t know where your next joke is going to
come from,”
Estrada told 210SA in a recent interview
about his stand-up comedy.
Estrada, who started out as an actor before
getting into comedy in the mid-1990s, said he learned
the most about performing from Charo.
“She taught me how to read and understand an audience,”
he said.
