Jade
Esteban Estrada
has one of those multiple descriptive titles.
He's a singer/dancer/actor/comedian who still calls San
Antonio home.
Estrada, 32, gets the chance to show off
those performance skills in front of a national
television audience this month.
Estrada will co-host the 19th Annual GLAAD
Media Awards, airing at 6 p.m., Friday, June 27, on the
Bravo Network.
"I'm really excited. It's nothing but a party,"
Estrada told reporters on the red carpet
before the awards ceremony, which was taped live on
April 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"I hope I'm funny tonight," he added.
The GLAAD Media Awards, which recognizes and honores
positive media portrayals of the lesbian, gay bisexual
and transgender (LGBT) community, will include
presentations from four ceremony locations - New York,
Los Angeles, San Francisco and South Florida.
Estrada
hosts the South Florida ceremony.
Estrada, who has been called a "master entertainer" and
"the first gay Latin star," is based in San Antonio,
where he helps organize a weekly stand-up comedy open mic night at Sam's Spot and teaches an occasional acting
workshop.
"A lot of people think it's just getting up there and
telling jokes, but it's the mother of performance
skills," Estrada says of open mic nights.
Estrada started doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1990s
after several acting gigs and a stint as choreographer
for Charo, whom he credits with teaching him about
performing.
"She taught me how to read and understand and audience,"
he said.
Estrada also has appeared on NBC's "Friday Night Lights"
and "30 Rock," and has performed in the one-man show
"Tortilla Heaven," about cultural assimilation among
Latinos. Estrada portrays seven characters in the show
that he's taken to venues throughout the Midwest,
Southwest and southern states.
"'Tortilla Heaven' is an ambassador to other Latino
communities around the country," Estrada said in a 2006
interview with Conexion.
